The decline of high-tech and construction jobs, along with corporate consolidations and the relocation of large manufacturing firms out of Sonoma County, has raised concern over the development, education and training of the work force to meet current and future demand. Much of this concern, voiced by the Innovation Council and others, focuses on the goal of finding better ways to match people and skills to changing workplace needs.

The Sonoma County Office of Education launched a program this fall to give 19,000 Sonoma County students access to career and college planning software, an online tool educational leaders hope will inspire children to begin thinking about their future.

SONOMA COUNTY – Local students and young adults will soon have access to new career planning, job placement and online resume building programs, following an effort by county leaders to motivate and prepare youth for employment.

Thanks to a combination of grant funding, donations from local businesses and individuals, and support from the Sonoma County Office of Education’s Career Development/ Workforce Preparation department, over 19,000 middle and high school students in 39 schools and community-based organizations are receiving lifetime accounts to the interactive Web-based Kuder Navigator Career Planning System. This system utilizes today’s technology to create a powerful connection between education and the changing needs of the 21st century workforce.
